The Fly By Katherine Mansfield - 1143 Words

Coping with the death of a beloved family member can be hard on the best of people. Coping may take time and following the steps of the grieving process which include denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. The most important step in coping with any loss is the final stage of acceptance. In the short story, â€Å"The Fly† by Katherine Mansfield, the boss experiences the tragic loss of his son which causes him to fall into a deep depression and, by killing an innocent fly, he learns the power of acceptance. After the unexpected death of his beloved son, the boss falls into a deep depression. He feels that he cannot move on from such a loss. The boss’s son was preparing to take over the business so the boss built up his business in preparation for his son: â€Å"it had no other meaning if it was not for the boy. Life itself had come to have no other meaning.† This proves how the boss feels that without his son to carry on the successful business that he has worked so hard to build, his life and his business has no other meaning. For six years after his son’s death, all the boss has to do is think about or talk about him and he cries uncontrollably for some time. The boss declares that â€Å"time . . . could make no difference,† suggesting how the boss feels that all the time in the world is not enough for him to heal from this tragic event. Gender Stereotypes in Cinema as Examined Through Taken and Snitch Introduction: Modern cinema is at once an opportunity for escapism and a direct reflection of realities within our broader culture. This is why the issue of gender portrayal and the representation of gender roles in film are both such important issues. In many ways, the images placed on the big screen can have a direct impact on the way that our collective culture forms its ideals and expectations. As a culture, we are highly susceptible to the impression-building that is conjured in our media and reflected back to us. In many cases, the performances on screen suggest an idealized version of ourselves, whether in their physical attraction, sexual prowess or heroic behavior. Perhaps this one of the fantasies that makes truly great cinema such a transporting experience. But even in great cinema, a certain reality must be acknowledged. Specifically, the fact that our culture is reflected in a certain respect on the movie screen suggests that many of its less-admirable qualities are also depicted. Diana Davis ENGL 2010 Professor Asplund 21st September 2012 The Responsibility of Taking Care of Our Elders My grandmother knows a lot about how it feels to be left in a house alone, waiting for someone to assist her to just get out of bed. This Saturday morning I decided to go visit her while my grandfather was at dialysis. I could hear the sound of relief in her voice just knowing her granddaughter was here to see about her. My grandmother has been blind since March 2012; she is a diabetic that has had an eye surgery to help repair a detached retina that is still healing. In the meanwhile she’s been dealing with paralysis on her right side from a stroke she suffered over twenty years ago, and it’s really taken a toll on her health. As I sat down beside her with a pen and paper I told her I wanted to get her point of view on how she feels about being an elderly person in this hard economy. I needed to know if they were able to cover all their needs on a fixed income. Did she really feel like her and my grandfather’s needs were really being met? As she spoke in her little sweet tone, she made me aware of how hard it is to do simple things like taking a shower, cooking and even going to the restroom is a hard task to do these days. She said â€Å"I feel like everyone is too busy to lend a hand, and me and your grandfather don’t want to be a burden on you all. † I thought to myself as her granddaughter, was I even doing enough? Was the responsibility of taking care of our elderly been overlooked, or was it being passed down to the few faithful people who were getting burnt out on the responsibility? My grandparents as parents bared the moral, legal, and ethical responsibilities to care for their children. However, now that my grandparents have reached an age where they can no longer look after themselves, the duties of their adult children to support them is less clear. It is therefore only fair to say now that their children are grown up and now their parents have become elderly, they should take up the responsibility to provide a decent life for their parents. While it is not a legal obligation, it is a moral obligation and it’s time to pay forward what is owed to our parents/grandparents. It’s our responsibility to help any family member in need. Our family has raised us and helped to survive in this uncertain economy, so why shouldn’t we help out when our parents and grandparents reach an age where they need our assistance? Consider this contrast between expectations and reality: Only 13 percent of some 4,000 U. S. workers surveyed for the 2011 (Aflac Work Forces Report) believe that the need for long-term care would affect their families. â€Å"The percentage of adult children providing personal care and/or financial assistance to a parent has more than tripled over the past 15 years,† the research group found. Of course, in today’s tough economy, it also is common for elderly adults to be supporting their adult children. But in some ways, that’s easier to accept: Parents often plan to leave whatever wealth they have to their children anyway. The flow of wealth from older to younger generation feels natural to many. But with Americans living so much longer now, the younger generation has to do more thinking about how they might care for parents who have exhausted their savings. After spending the whole day talking with my grandparents about their concerns I felt compelled to lend a hand. I made lunch for them and started to clean the kitchen. By the end of the day the whole house was spotless, and before I left I help my grandfather get my grandmother ready for bed. I have to say I was really exhausted when I finished, but the feeling I felt when I saw them smiling and relaxing together was worth a million bucks. As soon as I got home that night, I was determined that I had to help with this situation right away. The first thing to do was to call a family meeting. It was time for everyone to pull Davis 4 together and take up their responsibility to do their part. First thing we needed to do is put together a schedule and set it in stone. We all agreed that we would be assigned a day to go and check on our grandparents/parents. This action plan would include cooking, cleaning and donating at least a hundred dollars a month to help with their financial needs. So far this is working out great, and all it took was a concerned person to be a good listener and someone to pull a family together to put a plan in action. By working together as a family it helped to mend broken relationships and it helped us to accomplished many beautiful things. I’m happy to say my grandparents are well taken care now, and years have been added to their life span. Discussion Management is the backbone of any business organization. Schoenberg (2016) stated that management is important because it helps to operate the business in a systematic manner. In the words of Pacleb and Bocarnea (2016), a business organization requires to manage its business operations in a particular way because with the help of single way the companies can control the overall business operations properly. In support of this Filatova, Filatov and Semenova (2016) noted that it becomes easier to organize the production and operational systems if the companies apply one way to manage the business operations. For example, if a company implements the standardized production system in the company to manage the business, then it can properly concentrate on the volume and standard of the product. This helps the company enhancing its product and service quality. However, in this context, Appelbaum et al. (2015) argued that there are many companies where the production is dependent on the mental strength and creativity of the employees and in that cases, if the company focus on volume of production, then the quality of the product or service might be hampered. For example, in the handicraft products manufacturing companies the quality of the products depends on the creativity and there cannot be any particular time limit to complete the production of a particular product. In such cases, company must change its management style or way as per the situation. In support of this argument, Mullins and Schoar (2016) mentioned that the performance of a business organization also depends on the working environment of the company. For example, if a company suffers from internal conflicting situation, then it can hamper the performance standard of its employees. In this type of situation, the management of the company must try to manage the situation in such a way, which is most suitable for that particular situation. This can be better understood with the help of another example. A company is following autocratic leadership style for last 10 years and it has not faced any difficulties in the past days. However, currently, the employees in the company are more conscious about their rights and dignity (Slaats et al. 2015). Therefore, if the company continues with the same leadership style, then it may create huge problem between management and the employees, which negatively affects the performance standard of the company. However, on the contrary, Collenbusch et al. (2015) stated that if the companies do not implement a particular method for managing the business operations, then it cannot set the efficiency standard for its employees. In order to improve the efficiency standard of the employees, the companies must set a particular way of improvement. If the company changes the improvement styles, then it will be very complicated for the managers or the leaders to manage the employees. Boakye and Liu (2015) argued that the way of managing efficient employees and inefficient employees must be different. In case of efficient employees, the management requires to put less effort, which is not applicable for the inefficient employees. According to Pacleb and Bocarnea (2016), one particular way is required for the mass production in a organization. For example, in Toyota, the management follows the JIT technique for managing the production and operational systems. This particular technique helps to enhance the operational efficiency. In support, Schoenberg (2016) commented that if there is one particular management technique, then employees can also understand that properly and it becomes easier for them to identify what they need to do and how they can do that, but if the company changes its management techniques again and again, then the employees may get confused. Oppose to this Mullins and Schoar (2016) suggested that the management style of the companies must be as per the quality of the employees of it. If the employees like friendly management style, then manager must manage the business in friendly way, but if the employees are comfortable with more pressure and commanding management style, then the company may use that (Pacleb and Bocarnea 2016). On the contrary, Filatova, Filatov and Semenova (2016) noted that in todays business context, most of the large business organizations depend on machineries and so the management style in those organizations are of particular style. They do not prefer to change their management styles and the success level of them is enough to understand the importance of one particular style of management. However, Boakye and Liu (2015) believed that the management style within a company must be flexible enough because one particular management style can be boring for the employees. Moreover, a particular management style can hamper the flexibility of the employees. This is very problematic in any urgent situation (Collenbusch et al. 2015). For example, in an organization, the employees are habituated with the management style of the current manager. Now, if the manager of the company is replaced by any other manager and the management style of the second manager is different from the previous manag er, then the employees will face problem to cope up with the management style of the second manager (Mullins and Schoar 2016). This is not good for any company. Bodolica, Spraggon and Zaidi (2015) mentioned that at the current business world, human resource is one of the most important elements of the business organizations. Wells-Lepley, Thelen and Swanberg (2015) added that every manger must focus on the employees or human resource of the company because it is the efficiency of the employees that can bring success to the organization. Therefore, management style of the companies must be changed with the change in the types of employees. At the same time, the management style of the companies must be changed with the change in the business process of the company. Conclusion In the above discussion, it has been identified that in some of the companies one particular management style or one way of management has performed well. Many people have supported the implementation of one particular management style. However, in the recent days, business world is dynamic enough. Due to this, implementation of one particular management style is not effective in todays context rather it may bring problems to the companies. The study has identified that the use of one way of management can hamper the performance standard of the employees within the organization. Moreover, many researchers have also mentioned that the management style of the business organizations must be changed as per the changes in the business process. The working environment is another important factor that must be considered while selecting the management style of the company. The management style must be changed with the changes in the working environment. Moreover, the companies must concentrate on the human resource or the employees of them. Therefore, from the entire discussion, it can be said that there cannot be any one best way to manage. The way to manage the organization must be changed for the better performance as well as for the better future of the company.
